Nota Bena Bella 26 November 2002

Words of Wisdom from Jim:
Just because it's 'pp' don't sing slower.
(Just because it's 'ff' don't sing faster or abandon pitch)
Sing in the middle of the pitch
Sing in the middle of the vowel
Sing the best you know how
Always support the tone

O Magnum Mysterium: Memorize "O beata ... cujus" all eyes should be on Ann for that little bit. Remember not to pounce on the 'ya' of 'alleluia'. Enjoy singing the word, not being done with it!

Ceremony of Carols: Don't sing louder than 'beautiful'. It's more important that the music be beautiful than that it be loud.
Memorize the intro -- see if you can do it tonight w/out the music, or only with the words:

Ho-di-e Chris--tus na-tus est:
ho-di-e Sal-va-tor ap-pa-ru-it:
ho-di-e in ter-ra ca-nunt an-ge-li
lae-tan-tur arch-an-ge-li:
ho-di-e ex-sul--tant jus ti
di-cen-tes: glo-ri-a in ex-cel-sis De-o. Al-le-lu-ia!
Al-le-lu-ia! Al-le-lu-ia! (repeat as needed)

Get your music 'dressed'! Everyone should have their music in black binders or somehow turned black by the dress rehearsal.

NEXT WEEK is the concert! We're in the home stretch.

Publicize the concert! Distribute flyers, sell tickets. We need YOU to help fill the hall. The first orchestral rehearsal is frequently a little frightening for the chorus. EVERY season I hear the same comment: "It sounded so awful at the first orchestral rehearsal that I didn't invite people & then it was so beautiful, I wish I had told everyone to come." There is magic in the air, & it happens right down to the wire. Invite your friends, family etc. to this concert, it is going to be really fantastic. Have faith even if tonight doesn't sound great, & sends you in a panic off to practice (do practice, but don't be discouraged).

Check out the chorus dress information even if you've sung with us forever... Make sure you're not forgetting anything. The pages are blue & with the nota.

Please volunteer for one or more of the tasks necessary for the concert: riser set-up/pick-up, orchestra set-up, baking stuff, concession set-up etc. We need volunteers for Thursday, Saturday & Sunday.

NEXT SEASON Yes, always with a look forward: We are very pleased to announce our spring 2003 season when we'll perform music from L. Bernstein's irreverent Candide plus favorite Offenbach choruses. It's the best of all possible worlds! As usual, our spring semester will provide opportunities for solo, duet, and small-group work. Pre-registration starts now -- a great way to get a discount on tuition, cross one item off your holiday "to-do" list, and help us know how much music to order! Rehearsals start January 7.

Random Trivia: Lung volume at a low level activity is only 10-15% of the vital capacity. For strenuous activity it can go up to 50%. Singing long phrases may take all the reserve volume of the lungs.

Happy Thanksgiving! Here's wishing you a wonderful holiday.
