A Dose of Music Theory WhatÕs a mode? A seven-note scale that antedates major & minor scales (major & minor scales are also modes).
ÒMajor modeÓ would be a major scale
The Lydian mode, which weÕve been singing during warm-ups, & which appears in the Britten quite a lot can look like this:

  • ThatÕs ÔF-FÕ on only white notes, for those of you who play piano.
  • You can also think of this as a major scale with a sharp 4th . Note, the above ÔFÕ scale would have a B-flat if it were a major scale. C Lydian; cdef#gabc.
  • Another way of thinking of it isÉ 4th note of a major scale; so C Lydian is the 4th note if a G scale and F Lydian is the 4th note of a C scale.
